Early research work was on system services for synchronous collaboration, later work was on collaboration via mobile devices. One issued patent (US 6,618,710) and four pending patents.

Co-author of the "Same-Time Manifesto" that led to the development of the Lotus Sametime product. Leading contributor to the IETF working group on Instant Messaging and Presence Protocol (IMPP), and subsequently served as co-chair of that group. Also served as the Lotus representative to the W3C Advisory Committee.

Hired as Research Scientist in 1994, promoted to Architect in 1996, designated as Technical Assistant to the Chief Technology Officer in 1998, and promoted to Consulting Engineer in 1999.
